In traditional Chinese medicine, Fo-Ti belongs to the Blood Tonics category.

Fo-Ti improves hair growth and reduce hair loss by activating FGF-7 gene (fibroblast growth factor), which encodes proteins specific to epithelial cell growth if administered orally. In China, Fo-Ti is considered a mystical anti-aging agent.
